The TRUTH about Peptides in Skincare

Everyone wants to know if using Peptides in Skincare is worth the money.   And the answer is YES!

Peptides are a fantastic Anti-ageing ingredient.  There is laboratory evidence that providing cells with peptides that they need, can stimulate them to produce proteins your skin needs like collagen.

What are peptides?

Peptides occur naturally in the skin.  This is a great explanation from Healthline, “Peptides are amino acids that make up certain proteins needed by the skin. More specifically, collagen is made of three polypeptide chains, so adding peptides can stimulate your skin to make collagen.”

Since collagen production goes down as we age.  Having peptides in your skincare can help your skin keep producing it.

And more collagen can lead to firmer, younger-looking skin which is what we are all looking for.  One of the more popular peptides that are used is Matrixyl.

Do peptides in skincare work?

Matrixyl is an ingredient that has been used in skincare since 2000’s and there has been independent research that “shows that Matrixyl can nearly double the amount of collagen that our bodies produce.

Sederma, the manufacturer has found “that 2% Matrixyl Synthe’6 applied twice daily for five days increased type I collagen by 105%, type III collagen by 104% and type IV collagen by 42%.”

Matrixyl Synth’6 is the latest version of these peptides in skincare.  This version of Matrixyl is amazing because the magic is all on the inside.

Peptides are the signal that lets skin know, hey it’s time to produce Collagen.  The 6 major ways it stimulates the skin are:

  • Collagen I: the main part of the deeper skin layers
  • Collagen III & Collagen IV: collagens produced for wound-healing
  • Fibronectin: assists in tissue repair
  • Hyaluronic acid: improves skin elasticity
  • Laminin-5: anchors the skin’s layers

What are the benefits of using peptides in your skincare routine?

Did you know that you are losing as much as 20% of the collagen in your skin when you are going into menopause and that it can be as much as a 2% loss every year after that?

That is why applying skincare products with peptides like Matrixyl Synthe’6, topically (on the skin) is the most beneficial.  It’s also a fantastic humectant that adds moisture.

Make sure that you are adding products with peptides into your skincare routine!

The difference between Peptides and Retinols, which is better?

Both of these ingredients are gold standards for anti-aging skincare.  They both work in the battle against collagen loss.  But they go about it in different ways.

One major difference however is that while retinol can be irritating to your skin,  Peptides can offer a similar benefit without the irritation.

Known Interactions with other active ingredients.

Retinols don’t play nice with other ingredients like Vitamin C or AHAs.  But Peptides are different.  The Youthist goes deeper into the subject:

The chances of any negative interactions occurring between  Matrixyl and other ingredients are minimal.  In fact, the peptides are often found in formulas that combine with the likes of Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Retinoids (like Retinol), and AHAs (Glycolic Acid). “
